Understanding Male Depression

Depression signs and symptoms can differ in men and women. Men also tend to use different coping skills — both healthy and unhealthy — than women do. It isn't clear why men and women may experience depression differently. It likely involves a number of factors, including brain chemistry, hormones and life experiences.

Like women with depression, men with depression may:

Feel sad, hopeless or emptyFeel extremely tiredHave difficulty sleepingNot get pleasure from activities they once enjoyedOther behaviors in men that could be signs of depression — but not recognized as such — include:

Escapist behavior, such as spending a lot of time at work or on sportsAlcohol or drug abuseControlling, violent or abusive behaviorIrritability or inappropriate angerRisky behavior, such as reckless drivingBecause these behaviors could be signs of or might overlap with other mental health issues, professional help is the key to an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Free Depression Screening

To help diagnose illness, Barnabas Health Behavioral Health Center will host free depression screenings on Thursday, October 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1691 U.S. Highway 9 in Toms River.

Depression is characterized by depressed or sad mood, lack of pleasure in usual hobbies or interests, irritability, poor concentration, weight gain or loss, low energy and difficulties concentrating. Without an intervention, depression can lead to recurrent thoughts of death where the patient can develop suicidal ideation or a plan to end their life.

Anxiety drives depression, says Dr. Mary Jane Maser, APN the Clinical Director of Stepping Stones, Intensive Outpatient Program at Barnabas Behavioral Health Center.

Anxiety is overthinking negatively about problems in your life that you dont have control over. If you had control over them, its called problem solving. If youre overthinking something negative that you dont have control over- thats anxiety. If overthinking continues and is related to a loss you can become sad and depressed. People can also become depressed if they are overthinking things that they cannot control such as their relationship with a spouse, coworker or a teenager. Once you realize that youve done everything you can and dont have control, never did and never will, can lead many people to feel helpless and hopeless, continues Dr. Maser.

Sadness and Depression: What's the difference

Robin Williams was found dead this afternoon at his home near Tiburon, California, according to the Marin County Sheriff's Office. The actor and comedian was 63.

Emergency personnel found Williams unconscious and not breathing at 12:00 p.m., local time; he was pronounced dead at 12:02 p.m., according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of death.

"At this time, the Sheriff's Office Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made," the news release said.

Blog: Depression and Judaism

I have two black dogs. One makes me laugh, and one makes me cry.

One of my black dogs is named Jojo. Sometimes we refer to her as Jojo the Clown, because she makes my entire family laugh.

She has a dance that she does when she sees new people or favorite people, aka “the Jojo dance,” which consists of her front paws doing a waltz and her back paws doing the Charleston. Someday I need to stop laughing long enough to make a video.

Jojo is a rescue dog. She languished at her foster home, waiting for new people. The old people had gotten sick and had to give her up. After months of being passed over (something that often happens to black dogs), she became depressed.

For comfort, she stole food from the other dogs, and her normally nine-pound body ballooned to 15. When I met her, she was a sad, little, depressed dog. She lay there, looking sad until I picked her up. Then she peed all over me.

Robin Williams’ death: The effects on depression

The news of Robin Williams’ apparent suicide devastated and surprised many.

Several people interviewed about the comedian’s death have noted that Williams never seemed to be unhappy — and yet, he suffered from severe depression.

Experts said that’s more common than one might think.

Everyone gets sad from time to time. But depression is a more serious, lasting illness so intense it interferes with daily life.

And though persistent sadness, anxiousness or feelings of emptiness are often signs of the illness, there are other, lesser known symptoms, experts said.

“Not all the folks who suffer from depression are the type that we might see, you know, in a made-for-TV movie, where people are sad and weepy and crying,” said Dr. Michael Aisenberg, a licensed clinical psychologist at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.
