Depression MEdication List

Depression is a serious condition that should not be ignored and if you’re struggling with depression, it’s always good to have a top depression medication list handy. Depression is a state of emotional imbalance in which physical symptoms may include extreme sadness, sleeping problems, excessive fatigue, hopelessness, apathy, and physical pain. The main causes of depression are more psychological and emotional rather than physical.

Unfortunate circumstances, tragedies, chemical imbalances in the brain, and chronic stress are common causes of depression. It may also come about as a result of personality disorders such as schizophrenia, multiple personality disorder and bipolar disorder. To treat depression, there is a depression medication list which categorized different drugs differently.

Which Depression Medication Is Right For You?

A drug may be listed as an antidepressant but it should never come as a surprise that it does not work for you. It is not really clear why depression medication refuses to work on certain people and helps others.

Generally all the drugs that are found on the depression medication list are meant to treat emotional imbalances. Where there is some sort of emotional imbalance, depression is likely to abound. So if the drug can treat an emotional imbalance, it is bound to keep many depressive symptoms at bay.

Top Depression Medication List

Depression medications are categorized depending on the neurotransmitters which they target. As a consequence there are three many types of depression medication which include:

Tricyclic Antidepressants

These ones will prevent neurons from taking up serotonin and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters are known to cause hyperactivity of the neurons. The tricyclic antidepressants have an effect which is more general as they end up blocking the action of other neurotransmitters in the brain. They are usually the second choice of depression medication when a patient does not respond to SSRIs.

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)

SSRIs make the top depression medication list because this group is always the first option that a doctor will prescribe from. The medicines are very selective in terms of the neurotransmitters that they target. The will specifically affect the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)

If a patient does not respond to any of the two medications prescribed above, then this group will be prescribed. Monoamine oxidase is an enzyme which is found between neurons that cause the oxidation of neurotransmitters. This enzyme makes the neurotransmitters ineffective. The monoamine oxidase inhibitors are meant to destroy this enzyme.

Side-effects of Antidepressants

All drugs tend to have a side effect or two and depression medication is no exception. The SSRIs tend to be less reactive on most people. They have very few side effects but then again they might not work. It is important to watch yourself when you are on new medication for depression.

As mentioned above, some medication will not work for you, but may work for others.  Trying out various depression medications is common until the patient gets the right one for his or her symptoms.  There is not cause for concern if the first one or two medicines prescribed don’t seem to be working for you, as there are plenty to choose from.

The SSRIs tend to be mostly free of side effects compared to all the other medications. Unfortunately, they don’t work on everyone.

The monoamine oxidase inhibitors, which are the last resort for most people, usually have dreadful side effects on some people. If constipation and weight gain are not bad enough for you, sexual dysfunction is bound to be an issue. Nonetheless the effects are not permanent and will disappear a short while after you stop taking the medication.

It is my hope that you gleaned some wisdom from this depression medication list. There is help available for you if you suffer from clinical depression.  Along with medication, oftentimes talk therapy will help as well, as some depressive symptoms stem from emotional issues or past traumatic instances.

If you’re struggling with depressive symptoms, don’t wait any longer to get some help, as mental health professionals are more than willing to work with you to get you back to feeling happy and peaceful.  Reach out for help so that you do not have to live in the darkness any longer and can get back on track to your happy self.
