Anxiety and depression are two conditions which may seem to be alike in many aspects, but are in fact very different, as anxiety and depression symptoms vary.

What is anxiety?

Anxiety is common. It is the feeling of fear or nervousness brought about by the anticipation of an event or having to be around people. It can also be exaggerated, in which case it is referred to as a disorder. A person dealing with anxiety disorder usually has irrational fear, which may be general or related to a certain thing or aspect. As such, anxiety disorders are classified according to its causes.

There are seven common types:

Panic disorder - This is sudden feeling of terror for no cause at all, oftentimes resulting in a panic attack. It makes the patient feel as if he/she was going insane, as breathing rate increases, sweating occurs, the heart starts beating rapidly, and extreme fear rises. It can be quite paralyzing to someone who is experiencing a panic attack.  

• Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - This is anxiety that comes about as a result of a past terrifying experience in the patient’s life. It is triggered by memories and scenarios, which may seem to conform to the original event. 

• Generalized anxiety disorder - This is excessive fear and worry without cause. 

Social anxiety disorder - This is excessive worry about the patient’s appearance and impression on the others. It is caused by anticipation of everyday social situations. 

• Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) - This is constant thoughts of fear and worry that causes the patient to embark on a routine, which may at times be like a ritual for them. The objective of this is to keep the fear away. 

• Specific phobia - This is an intense fear that is triggered by a specific object or situation. 

Anxiety Symptoms

While anxiety and depression symptoms may seem very similar, they may vary greatly depending on the patient or the specific kind of condition in either case. Here are the most common anxiety symptoms:

• Panic and fear. 
• Palpitations and dizziness. 
• Tension of the muscles. 
• Nightmares. 
• Numbness of the hands and feet and/or sweat in the same places. 
• Uncontrollable and obsessive thoughts.
• Dry mouth. 

Depression

Unlike anxiety, depression is associated with sadness and gloom. This is not the occasional feeling of being down, but a constant one without end. It affects the emotions, making the patient feel sad all the while. It also brings about a negative feeling towards life, making the patient feel hopeless and thus adding to his/her woes. 

It affects the patient’s life in general, and it may eventually cause the patient to take drastic measures like suicide in a bid to make the feeling go away. As such, knowing the symptoms to look out for is very important since action can then be taken earlier.

Here are the symptoms of depression:

Loss of energy. 
Irritability and anger. 
Self-loathing. 
Reckless behavior usually emanating from hopelessness. 
Feelings of hopelessness. 
Loss of appetite, which eventually leads to loss of weight. 
Disturbed sleep, a condition that may eventually lead to loss of sleep all the same. 
Trouble concentrating on one thing. 
Troubled thoughts.
Loss of interest in people or activities that used to bring one joy.
Suicidal thoughts or attempts


Both of these conditions can end up leading the patient to self-destruction if not addressed early enough. It is thus paramount to counter them as early as possible by seeking all sorts of help until you get the right one for you.
