In the mist of the dark clouds there is a bright sunshine breaking forth

When you were little you might have thought that life would be a breeze, but the older you get, the more you realize that life can throw curve balls at you from all different angles at times.  You encounter painful situations and people that tend to hurt you at times.  You may encounter family problems or problems at school.  Perhaps you lose someone you love or your parents have marriage problems.Or you encounter a broken heart due to a relationship break up. 

Pain is bound to show up in your life and sometimes that pain can get overwhelming.

It’s normal to get sad once in a while, but those who suffer from depression struggle with an intense sadness that can really cause pain and suffering in their lives. That intense sadness can really affect a life in so many ways. Clinical depression, which is depression that has been diagnosed by a Clinical Psychologist, affects about 1 in 10 adults in the United States, which tallies over 19 million men and women. 

It is estimated that about 20 percent of teenagers struggle with serious depression, but only about 30 percent are actually getting treated for it. 

These are only the recorded numbers, as there may be millions more suffering from depression that goes unnoticed and untreated. One thing is for sure, depression in men, women, and teens is steadily increasing and it is causing the healthcare industry to take notice and increase the efforts at treating the illness.

Schools and universities are doing more in order to screen for depression and offer assistance for those who are struggling. There is help available for any teen or adult that is struggling.

Depression is defined as a mental disorder that has various characteristics that can make life difficult, including:

  • Intense feelings of sadness, sometimes the feelings can feel overwhelming or unbearable
  • Feelings of hopelessness and emptiness
  • Lack of energy, fatigue, no desire to do much of anything
  • Loss of appetite or overeating
  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, quitting extracurricular activities
  • Isolating from family and friends, can’t seem to have fun with anyone
  • Increase in sleep or inability to sleep well, can’t fall asleep or wake up a lot
  • Lack of ability to concentrate, lose focus or have no focus
  • Thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts

We live in a society that battles tremendous anxiety and stress each day while we hustle about here and there doing all sorts of tasks.  We also encounter various situations that can cause us to feel sad, frustrated, angry, hopeless, and so on.  A certain amount of sadness is normal at times, but you can usually get through it within a few days, but depression lingers for weeks, months, or years.

Depression can be felt as a heavy weight upon yourself or a dark cloud that follows you wherever you go.  Some people state that no matter what they do, the darkness is right there making them feel extremely sad and tired.

It is a terrible feeling and those that struggle with it don’t want to; it’s a mental illness and ought to be treated as such.  It is also helpful to realize that the person struggling from depression is not essentially broken, he or she is struggling with negative emotions and perhaps a chemical imbalance in the brain that can effectively be treated. 

Some people attach labels to those who are depressed and some that are depressed feel like they are “different”, but know that it’s alright to admit if you are struggling and in order to feel better, you actually must admit this.

It is important to realize that there is help available for teen and adult depression.  Treatments such as counseling, medication, and alternative medicines have proven to be effective in reducing or eliminating depression symptoms.  There is hope beyond depression and darkness.
